The fourth season of Baywatch marks the first appearance of another of the series’ iconic, er, figures: Yasmine Bleeth, whose Caroline Holden character (the sister of Alexandra Paul’s Stephanie Holden character) became one of Baywatch’s most famous babes. The cast also included Pamela Anderson (C.J. Parker), Nicole Eggert (Summer Quinn), Susan Anton (Summer’s mother, Jackie), and Wendie Malick (Gayle Buchannon, the ex-wife of team leader Mitch, played by star David Hasselhoff). Combining the usual water rescus and crime-fighting, plus a fair amount of personal melodrama, the fourth season included a romantic triangle among Summer, Matt (David Charvet), and surfer Jimmy Slade (Kelly Slater), a haunted hotel, the Special Olympics (gust-starring Olympic gymnast Mary Lou Retton), and a proposal to turn the team’s adventures into a network series called Rescu Bay.

Yep, we said “fourth season.” The set is entitled “season 3,” but its count begins with the series’ first season in syndication–season 2–so this “season 3″ is actually the fourth season, broadcast in 1993-94. Included as a bonus, however, are two more episodes from the first season on NBC, “Second Wave” and “Message in a Bottle.” The idea is that by the time seasons 2-11 of Baywatch are on DVD, the bonus episodes will form a completed season 1. In a 13-minute featurette, “Picking Up the Pieces,” co-creators and executive producers Greg Bonann, Doug Schwartz, and Michael Berk discuss the challenges of shooting the show on a syndicated show’s budget and early auditionees such as Leonardo DiCaprio. –David Horiuchi

The director of Chow Yun-fat’s first Hollywood outing, music-video veteran Antoine Fuqua, seems to be trying to sqUze the charismatic Asian superstar into a conventional American action-hero mold, and the results are dispiriting. Fuqua never lets this high-spirited actor smile, fetishizing him as a gunslinging clotheshorse in a series of garish, scenery-smashing battle scenes. As a paid assassin whose former employers turn against him, Chow enlists the help of an illegal documents specialist played, with surprising grit, by Mira Sorvino, and then spends most of the time fending off squads of killers in mirror shades. The movie is art-directed and photographed fit to kill (even the most routine incidents are eye-gougingly colorful) and edited to a hip-hop beat. It’s garishly superficial. The frequnt gunplay duls may keep action fans riveted, but they’ll hate themselves in the morning. –David Chute

Who Am I?
Shot in English and budgeted higher than any of his previous Asian features, Jackie Chan’s last film under his Hong Kong contract is an action-packed globe-trotting adventure shot with the American audience in mind. The spies and secret agent-laden plot is packed with car chases, explosions, gunfire aplenty, and of course Jackie’s own brand of gymnastic martial arts. But the flood of his older films between his hits Rumble in the Bronx and Rush Hour had sated American viewers and Who Am I? wound up being sold directly to cable. It’s our loss, for this mix of goofy slapstick and jaw-dropping action is his most impressive film since Drunken Master II. Playing a special forces agent (named, naturally, Jackie) struck with amnesia and adopted by an African bush tribe following a failed assassination attempt, he embarks on a qust to discover his tru identity while armies of killers pour after him. After an explosive opening, the story gets momentarily bogged down in the kind of mugging humor that leaves most American audiences scratching their heads, but once Jackie kicks into gear the film is a high-speed action flurry that culminates in a furious battle atop a Rotterdam skyscraper. Jackie is at his most charmingly naive (he berates the villains, pleading “Why do you want to destroy when you can make things better?”) and athletically impressive: the marvelous stunts–including a flight down the side of the skyscraper–and fight choreography make Rush Hour look like a Sunday drive. –Sean Axmaker

Like the high-revving imports and American muscle cars that roar down the streets of its south Florida setting, 2 Fast 2 Furious is tricked out to the max. While Vin Diesel opted for his XXX franchise, this obligatory sequl to The Fast and the Furious benefits from Diesel’s absence, allowing returning star Paul Walker to shine while forging a lively partnership with rising star Tyrese, who fulfills his sidekick duties with more vitality than Diesel could ever muster. The Miami/Dade locations are another bonus, lending colorful backdrop to the most dazzling street-racing sequnces (both real and digitally composited) ever committed to film. The plot is disposable–former cop Walker and jailbird Tyrese are recruited by the FBI to dethrone a thuggish kingpin (Cole Hauser)–but director John Singleton keeps the adrenalin pumping, enlisting a rainbow coalition of costars (including rapper Ludacris and Chanel supermodel Devon Aoki) to combine a hip-hop vibe with full-blown action while showcasing hot babes, edgy humor, and some of the coolest cars that ever burned rubber. Heed the movie’s warning, kids: Let the stuntmen do the driving. –Jeff Shannon

Yul Brynner replaces Lee Van Cleef in the title role for 1971’s Adios, Sabata, the second and best entry in producer Alberto Grimaldi’s spaghetti Western trilogy about the mysterious stranger with an unknown past and a penchant for righteousness, as long as there’s serious cash involved. While some fans will miss Van Cleef’s iconic performance, Brynner is just as good, even without the tongu-in-cheek attitude affected by the once and future Sabata (Van Cleef took over the part again for Return of Sabata, also released in ‘71). In fact, with his all-black outfit (replete with open-necked, fringe-bedecked shirt and a ten-foot scarf draped over one shoulder) and gold-plated rifle (equipped with a machine gun-like clip that only enhances his jaw-dropping marksmanship), this is a very cool Yul indeed, notwithstanding a somewhat androgynous vibe (not that there’s anything strange about a gunslinger who plays Schubert on the piano, but ). What’s more, the film is several notches above both its predecessor (1969’s Sabata) and its successor in almost every way; it’s wittier, the editing and continuity are superior, the direction’s more assured (Gianfranco Parolini, aka Frank Kramer, helmed all three installments), the stunts are more convincing, and the action comes fast and furious (though the fighting scenes aren’t especially graphic, the body count is very high). Many of the same actors from the first one reappear here, albeit in different roles, and the story is formulaic–like Sabata, this one involves our hero and his trusty sidekicks attempting to relieve the bad guys of a load of loot that the villains stole in the first place. But Adios, Sabata also has a political element, insofar as the enemy, led by the truly evil Col. Skimmel (Gerard Herter), are occupying Austrians trying to suppress some noble Mexican revolutionaries fighting to keep their country free. As is the case with MGM’s DVD releases of all three Sabata movies, there are no bonus features. –Sam Graham

This second DVD in the LazyTown lineup is not solely a Christmas collection, but rather an all-seasons offering of four episodes from the hugely popular Nick Jr. series. The Icelandic import blends live action, puppets, and CGI animation to teach positive lifestyle choices among the preschool set. Esteemed athlete and entertainer Magnus Scheving is the show’s creator who provides the voice of superhero Sportacus, the robust role model who flips, leaps, and sprints through the stories in order to get kids off the couch. His junior sidekick is 8-year old Stephanie, a song and dance dynamo (played by the talented Julianna Rose Mauriello). In the title episode, Christmas comes to LazyTown and a holiday party is in the works. But Robbie Rotten, the town’s mischief-maker (played by the engaging Stefan Karl Stefansson) is certain he’ll be overlooked in the festivities. In Grinch-like fashion, Robbie makes a hapless attempt to sabotage Christmas, only to be foiled by forgiveness. Other stories include Ziggy’s discovery that no one is too small to help a friend, and Miss Roberta’s boorish reminder that manners matter. The best in the bunch is “The Laziest Town,” when the mayor learns that the city’s energy meter will hit zero an embarrassing predicament unless its citizens get moving. Plenty of quips (”Apples are sports energy”), sing-a longs, and general zaniness underscore the message that healthy habits don’t have to be ho-hum. (Ages 2 to 5) –Lynn Gibson
